Stay safe, inside and out

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dangerously cold weather that has descended on central Ohio has prompted safety experts to warn about the various hazards associated with extreme cold.

Emergency officials are asking Ohioans to get in touch with friends, family and loved ones, and help spread the word about how to stay safe.

Several cities have opened warming centers. The following Columbus Recreation and Parks facilities are open to the public as warming centers during traditional operating hours:
Dodge, 667 Sullivant Ave.
Gillie, 4625 Morse Centre
Martin Janis, 600 E. 11th Ave
Lazelle Woods, 8140 Sancus
Marion Franklin, 2801 Lockbourne
Whetstone, 3923 N. High Street

The Whitehall Senior Center, 4924 Etna Road, also served as a refuge.

The best advice is to stay inside, but if you must go out, make sure all exposed skin is covered because frostbite sets in quickly.

At home, space heaters should be kept at least three-feet from flammable objects and pets should be brought indoors.

Drivers need to make sure their vehicle’s battery is in good shape, because the cold saps power quickly. Mechanics also recommend checking the antifreeze level and keeping the gas tank near full to avoid ice in the tanks and fuel lines.
