Storm brings snow, winds, cold

COLUMBUS- A major winter storm that blanketed much of the Midwest and Northeast with snow left behind bone-chilling cold.

Wind Chill Advisory for Delaware, Madison, Union counties 7PM Mon.-6AM Tuesday. Wind chills as low as
15 below zero expected. Coldest wind chill will be Monday evening.
Temperatures and wind chill will warm after midnight.

Level 1 Snow Emergency: Delaware, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, Union – Drive with caution

Level 2 Snow Emergency: Fairfield – Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be on roads. Contact employers to see if it is necessary to report to work.

Due to the frigid weather, the City of Columbus canceled the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day march on Monday but an indoor program at East High School, 1500 E. Broad Street, is still scheduled at 4:00 p.m.

Temperatures were below zero at nearly all central Ohio reporting locations early Monday morning with wind chills ads low as -20.

Temperatures at midday Sunday were in the single digits with wind chills around -20.

Winter Storm Harper was the result of a clash of an Arctic high pressure system with a low pressure system coming through the Ohio Valley, said National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Hofmann.

Many major cities like New York City and Boston were spared major snowfall. But a mix of rain and dropping temperatures wreaked havoc on air travel with nearly 5,000 flights canceled around the country Sunday.

Officials say at least two more people have died as a result of the storm.

A 12-year-old girl was killed in suburban Chicago after a snow fort collapsed while she was playing outside a church as temperatures hovered around 14 degrees. A utility worker in Connecticut was fatally struck by a falling tree as he was repairing a power line.

That brings the storm’s death toll up to at least three people. A snowplow driver in Kansas was killed Saturday when the plow he was driving rolled over on a highway.
