COLUMBUS – A strong, fast-moving storm knocked down poles, trees and power lines across central Ohio Wednesday, prompting thunderstorm and tornado warnings though no confirmed twisters touched down.
UPDATE 6/12/20 8:00 a.m.: The National Weather Service confirms an EF0 tornado touched down northwest of Chillicothe on Wednesday with maximum estimated winds of 75 mph with a path length of about 6 miles.
As of 9:00 p.m., about 80,000 AEP Ohio customers were without power. Early Thursday morning, more than 10,000 AEP and South Central Power customers were waiting for power to be restored.
The National Weather Service reported a 63 mph wind gust at Ohio State’s Don Scott Field on the Northwest Side.
Trees and power lines were knocked down in Upper Arlington, Marble Cliff and Dublin. Two trees were uprooted in the area of W. 5th Avenue near the Scioto River. Winds knocked down several large trees in Westerville and Galena.
No injuries were reported.
Roads were still closed because of storm debris early Thursday, including State Route 161 between Linworth Road and State Route 315, Linworth Roads between Snouffer Road and State Route 315 on the Northwest Side. Worthington-Galena Road was closed between N. High Street and Shrock Road.
State Route 37 was closed between Coonpath Road and Rainbow Drive in Fairfield County due to downed power lines.
