Student killed near OSU campus in one of 2 weekend murders

COLUMBUS – Police say an Ohio State University student from New Jersey was killed in an early morning shooting near campus, one of two men fatally shot in Columbus over the weekend.

The city has now seen 126 homicides this year.

An 18-year-old man is under arrest on a murder charge in connection with the shooting death early Sunday following a disturbance at a party, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Homicide Unit said.

Chase Meola, 23, a fifth-year marketing major from Mahwah, N.J. was found by officers in an alley in the area of 124 E. 14th Avenue at 2:09 a.m.

Reports indicated that some people were asked to leave a party at a suspended fraternity house in the area and an altercation occurred outside.

A 19-year-old man was killed in a shooting that also left a teenage girl injured on the East Side late Saturday night.

Jonathan Davis and another man were riding in a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old girl when the vehicle was fired upon by someone in another vehicle near the intersection of E. Livingston Avenue and Kenwick Road just before 11:34 p.m., Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.

Davis and the girl were struck and taken to Grant Medical Center where Davis died just after midnight, Marable said.

The teen was listed in stable condition.

The third occupant of the vehicle was not injured.

Three people were injured in other shooting incidents Saturday, police said.

A man and a woman were hurt when someone in a vehicle shot at them while they were driving in the area of Old Leonard Avenue and St. Clair Avenue at 12:54 a.m. and a man was shot while walking in the 700 block of Canonby Place at 6:33 a.m.
