Students robbed after OSU, city announce safety push

COLUMBUS – Less than two days after the university announced a #20 million safety initiative, Ohio State officials had to issue a neighborhood safety bulletin when three students were robbed at gunpoint a few blocks east of campus.

The three were walking southbound on Indianola Avenue, near Woodruff Avenue, at 3:18 a.m. Sunday when a black Honda Accord stopped next to them two males, reported to be between the ages of 17 and 21, got out, pulled handguns, and demanded the victims’ property, according to the safety alert.

The suspects got back in the car operated by a third suspect and drove away.

No injuries were reported.

The incident came after Friday’s announcement by university president Kristina Johnson and Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther that OSU planned to invest $2 million per year over the next decade to enhance safety and security on and around campus.

A safety notice had been issued earlier in the day after someone fired a weapon at a home near Tuller Street and Woodruff Avenue.

This increased security will include additional police officers, expanded patrols, added mobile lighting and at least 10 additional mobile camera systems and adding more officers to the university police department.
