Suppliers lower prices to attract drivers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Central Ohio motorists are find lower gas prices to start the work week after one survey found nationwide prices saw their biggest drop of the year.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Columbus was $3.38 in Monday’s survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and WEX Inc. That’s 14 cents less than a week ago — and 22 cents lower than a month ago.

The statewide average of $3.37 a gallon was 29 cents lower than on June 28 and the national average was $3.52, 16 cents lower a month ago.

Oil industry analyst Trilby Lundberg’s survey of gas stations on Friday found that prices had dropped 9 cents a gallon over the past two weeks, the largest drop this year, despite a rise in crude-oil prices.

Lundberg and other analysts say U.S. refiners, enjoying plentiful supplies, have aggressively cut wholesale prices to chase sales.

The lowest average in Ohio was $3.22 in Toledo. The highest was $3.41 in Akron.
