COLUMBUS – Authorities in central Ohio have arrested a suspect in a 31-year-old murder mystery.
Robert Edwards was taken into custody on Friday and charged with aggravated murder in the slaying of Alma Lake, whose nude body was found lying in the grass on street corner in Urbancrest in June of 1991.
State and county officials say investigators turned over evidence from the death of the 30-year-old Lake to the laboratory at the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, where forensic scientists were able to develop a suspect’s DNA profile, which was researched but not unveiled, and the case grew cold, according to a news release from the office of state attorney general Dave Yost.
At the request of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in 2020, BCI’s Cold Case Unit conducted advanced DNA analysis, which ultimately led to the identification of Edwards, 67, as a suspect.
He also was charged with possession of drugs.
The investigation team continues to explore the Edwards’ involvement in other cases.
