Suspect in restaurant holdup shot by police

COLUMBUS – Columbus police say a suspect in an armed robbery at Northeast Side restaurant Friday morning is in critical condition after being shot by an officer.

Witnesses told police the suspect, identified as Kenneth Chandler, 35, fired gunshots during the attempted robbery at the Steak N Shake in the 5400 block of Cleveland Avenue just after 9:00 a.m., according to a statement from the Division of Police Public Information Office.

After fleeing the scene, Chandler allegedly attempted to carjack a vehicle and was found outside a nearby business by officers responding to the robbery report, police said.

Chandler still had the handgun and one of the officers shot him. Chandler was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital where he was listed in critical condition, police said.

Charges are expected to be filed against him.

There were no other injuries reported. A weapon was recovered at the scene, according to police.

The shooting is under investigation by the division’s Critical Incident Response Team.

The officer involved in the shooting was identified as Ofc. John Johnson, a 29-year veteran.
