Suspect in SE Side murder surrenders

COLUMBUS – A 21-year-old West Side man is in jail after turning himself in to police to face a murder charge in connection with a fatal shooting on the Southeast Side early Saturday.

Officers sent to the 4600 Block of Fenimore Court just after 2:00 a.m. on a report of a shooting found a 32-year-old man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, Sgt. Edward Powell III of the Columbus police homicide unit said.

Officers rendered first aid until Madison Township arrived and took the man to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where he died just before 3:30 a.m., Powell said.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Bayette Mitchell turned himself in at Columbus Police headquarters later that day and was taken to the Franklin County Jail where he has been charged with murder.

This was the 48th homicide of the year in Columbus.
