Suspect injured in officer-involved shooting

COLUMBUS – One suspect was taken to the hospital after a chase and shootout with Columbus police officers on the Southwest Side Tuesday night.

Officers dispatched to the 1800 block of Creekside Drive at approximately 8:06 p.m. on a report of shots fired to a home found the gunfire had come from a suspect car that fled the scene, Division of Police spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua said.

Officers found the car and tried to stop it but Fuqua says a pursuit ensued that ended when the car crashed on Joyful Street, north of Briggs Road,and several suspects running from the scene.

Officers pursued the suspects on foot and a there was a confrontation where 18-year-old Cameron Schreck exchanged shots with officers Matthew Lausch and Douglas McClain taken into custody.

The original house that officers were dispatched to was hit with multiple gunshots, as well as another residence and several cars.

Several firearms were recovered at the scene, Fuqua said.

Shreck was transported to Grant Hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable condition. He was charged with with discharging a firearm into a habitation, police said.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The investigation by the Critical Incident Response Team and the division’s Crime Scene Search Unit continues.
