Suspect killed in SWAT standoff

COLUMBUS – Columbus SWAT officers fatally shot an armed man following a 1 1/2-hour standoff at a home in Franklinton early Sunday.

UPDATE 5/21/18 12:29 p.m.: The suspect has been identified as Corey Cordova, 30, of Columbus.

At 10:30 p.m. Saturday, police dispatchers received a call reporting a man firing shots into the ground near the area of 1342 W. State Street, division spokesman Sgt. Dean Worthington said.

When officers responded, the suspect fled inside a residence at 1342 W. State Street.

SWAT officers and the Hostage Negotiation Team responded and attempted to negotiate with the suspect, Worthington said.

At approximately 12:10am, the suspect made a threatening gesture with a handgun and Worthington says officers shot the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene by Division of Fire personnel.

This is the seventh police involved shooting in Columbus in 2018, Worthington said.
