The unidentified 23-year-old man was found a short time later after running away from his car, arrested and taken to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where police spokesman Sgt. Dean Worthington says he was recovering from one gunshot wound.

Officers approached the man at 12:09 a.m. Friday after getting a call about someone slumped behind the wheel of a car near E. 16th Avenue and Summit Street in a student housing neighborhood west of the OSU campus.

Worthington says an officer approached the vehicle and radio transmissions indicate the driver tried to hit the officer with the vehicle.

The officer fired their weapon and the driver fled the scene on E. 17th Avenue.

The police helicopter located the vehicle near the railroad tracks at Big 4 Street and E. 16th Avenue where Worthington says the pilots saw the driver get out of the vehicle and try to run away.

Officers took the man into custody and he was taken to the OSU Medical Center in stable condition with at least one gunshot wound.

The incident will be investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team made up of specially trained investigators from the Homicide Unit and the findings will be forwarded to the Columbus Division of Police Firearms/Police-Involved Death Review Board and senior division officials for review, Worthington said.
