Suspect shot to death after wrong-way crash

COLUMBUS — Authorities say a shooting suspect fleeing police got into a wrong-way crash on I-270 on the Southeast Side and was then killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement personnel.

UPDATE 3/9/21 9:11 a.m.: The suspect in this incident has been identified as Andrew Teague, 43. The Columbus police officer has been identified as Ofc. John Kifer, a 31-year veteran assigned to the Canine Unit and the deputy has been identified as Deputy Michael Severance, a 48-year veteran assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau as a canine handler, according to a joint Division of Police/Sheriff’s Office release.

At about 3:00 p.m. Friday, Columbus police started pursuing a suspect who had warrants for felonious assault in a shooting last month.

Police said Franklin County sheriff’s deputies got involved and saw that the suspect had a firearm.

Authorities said the suspect got onto eastbound I-270 going the wrong direction and caused a head-on collision between U.S. 33 and I-70 then exchanged gunfire with a Columbus police officer and a deputy and was killed.

The interstate was losed for several hours during the investigation.
