Suspect wounded by officer

COLUMBUS – Police say a suspect is recovering after being shot by an officer during a foot chase on the East Side Wednesday night.

Officers were dispatched to the Speedy Mart Mobil convenience store and gas station at the intersection of E. Livingston Avenue and Barnett Road at 9:30 p.m. to check on a report of a person with a gun standing near a gold vehicle, police spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua said.

The officers saw the suspect with the gun and, during an interaction with an officer, the suspect fled the scene, Fuqua said.

During the following foot pursuit, the suspect held onto the firearm and an officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect in the leg, Fuqua said.

The suspect was arrested a short time later and a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Fuqua said the suspect was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

POlice identified the officer involved as Sgt. John Hawkins, an eight-year veteran.

Charges are pending on the armed suspect, identified as 19-year-old Tyresse Smith.

No officers were injured.

The Columbus Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating.
