Suspects in 2 murders in custody

COLUMBUS – Police credit help from the public with aiding efforts to track down the man investigators believe gunned down a 51-year-old man in the Short North early Wednesday.

Jeremy Vest, 47, is in the Franklin County Jail after being arrested on a murder charge stemming from the fatal shooting of Nicholas Evans in an alley behind a United Dairy Farmers store in the 800 block of N. High Street at approximately 1:48 a.m., Sgt. Edward Powell III of the Columbus police homicide unit said.

Vest was located in the 1300 block of N. High St. and arrested by the by the Franklin County SWAT Unit, Powell said.

This was the 76th homicide in Columbus in 2022.

Suspect in East Side homicide surrenders

1-year-old man was shot to death in an alleyway behind the United Dairy Farmers store in the 800 block of N. High Street at approximately 1:48 a.m., Sgt. Edward Powell III of the Columbus police homicide unit said.

Officers responding to a report of a shooting found the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, Powell said.

This was the 76th homicide in Columbus in 2022.

Suspect in East Side homicide surrenders

A 18-year-old man police believe was responsible for a deadly shooting on the East Side earlier this month turned himself in to authorities at the Franklin County Jail on Wednesday.

Jonathan Hopkins was charged with murder in the shooting death of Reynard Reed in front of a home on Lilley Avenue on July 15, Sgt. David Shimberg of the homicide unit said.

Officers found Reed, 46, lying on the sidewalk in front of a home and died later at the hospital, Shimberg said.

Investigators believe Reed and Hopkins were involved in an altercation which might have led to the shooting.
