SWACO expands curbside recycling to 5 communities

COLUMBUS – Thousands more central Ohio residents will have access curbside recycling that takes less money and effort, thanks to the addition of new recycling bins in five Columbus suburbs.

More than 38,000 new, larger wheeled recycling carts are hitting the streets in Blendon Township, Gahanna, Westerville, Reynoldsburg, and Bexley Wednesday, said Hanna Greer-Brown, communications manager for the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, which operates the Franklin County landfill and coordinates recycling and waste disposal in the region.

Earlier this year, SWACO launched a new program to allow communities that don’t own curbside recycling carts to purchase the 65-gallon bins at a discount. Wednesday’s development signifies a significant widening of that program, Greer-Brown said.

The new carts provide many advantages over the older versions, Greer-Brown said. They are much easier to roll to the curb, they increase the volume of waste that can be recycled and reduce the potential for litter blowing on streets.

The carts have already been distributed in Westerville and will roll out in the other communities by the end of May, Greer-Brown said.
