COLUMBUS – A Columbus SWAT officer has been shot and a suspect is in custody and hospitalized following an overnight standoff in a burning North Side building, according to a statement from the division public information office.

Residents of nearby homes and apartments were evacuated, others were told to stay inside and non-emergency traffic was kept away from the area around the scene at N. High Street and W. California Avenue, police said.
The officer and the suspect were both injured during the incident but neither their names nor the extent of their injuries were known.
Smoke and flames were seen coming from the building but the situation was too dangerous for firefighters to battle the fire, police said.
