Makayla Townes, 17, told officers who responded to the incident in the 400 block of S. Champion at 6:49 p.m. that a group of girls arrived at her home but she refused because she had her infant son with her, assault unit detectives said.

Townes told investigators Lavada McCurdy opened the trunk of the vehicle she arrived in and pulled out a large handgun. While Townes was holding her child and standing with friends, police say McCurdy, 25, opened fire, hitting a vehicle they were standing near but not Townes or her son.

McCurdy was arrested by patrol officers and taken to Columbus Police headquarters for questioning. The incident is still under investigation and no charges against McCurdy had been announced early Tuesday.

Townes and her son were not injured, police said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Columbus Police Assault Unit at 645-4141 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 645-TIPS(8477).
