Teen brothers die when pickup crashes into icy waters

COLUMBUS – Two teenage brothers from Blacklick were killed and two of their relatives were hurt when a pickup truck went out of control on an icy interstate onramp and plunged into the Scioto River near Grandview Saturday afternoon.

Feixiang Friend, 17, was driving a 2002 Ford F-150 on the on-ramp from Dublin Road to eastbound I-670 just after 5:00 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle on a patch of ice, Sgt. Brooke Wilson of the Accident Investigation Unit said.

The pickup struck a concrete barrier and rolled over the barrier and down an embankment coming to rest upside down in water, Wilson said.

Friend was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m. His 13-year-old brother, Joshua, was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Todd Friend, 64, also of Blacklick, was listed in stable condition at OSU Wexner Medical Center and another 13-year-old boy who was riding in the truck was in stable condition at Children’s Hospital, Wilson said.

The investigation is being conducted by the Accident Investigation Unit.
