Teen shot four times in argument over scooter

COLUMBUS – Police say a 15-year-old was shot four times following an argument over an electric scooter.

Careun Howard was listed in stable condition after surgery for multiple bullet wounds suffered when a man who had argued with Howard and an 18-year-old friend earlier fired from a passing car on Gladstone Avenue near E. 18th Avenue in South Linden Monday afternoon, said Det. Deryl Kowalski of the Assault Unit.

Howard was struck twice in the abdomen and once each in the hip and thigh, Kowalski said.

Howard was unable to be interviewed by investigators but his friend, Jarrell Rodgers, told them he and Howard were trying to rent a Bird scooter in the area at 4:34 p.m. when a man told them that the scooter was already rented.

Rodgers told police there was an argument and he and Howard walked away north on Gladstone Avenue. A short time later a silver sedan drove the other way past them on Gladstone Avenue and the man they were arguing, who was a passenger in the car, opened fire on them from the intersection of Gladstone and E. 23rd Avenue, Kowalski said.

Rodgers says he and Howard ran to the area of 1099 E. 20th Avenue where police were called.

Kowalski says two houses on E. 23rd Avenue were also struck by bullets.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call Kowalski at 614-645-4189 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
