The write stuff: Lawmakers want cursive requirement

COLUMBUS – A central Ohio state representative wants Ohio schoolchildren to learn how to write in cursive.

Representatives Andrew Brenner (R-Powell) and Marilyn Slaby (R-Copley) introduced legislation that could make cursive writing a requirement in Ohio schools by adding the following language to the state’s educational requirements:

Handwriting instruction in kindergarten through fifth grade to ensure that students develop the ability to print letters and words legibly by third grade and to create readable documents using legible cursive handwriting by the end of fifth grade.

At least seven states, Arizona, Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, already require schools to teach cursive handwriting.

With the growing use of computers and other devices with keyboards, the importance of handwriting had been on the wane over the past several years.
