Tips for safe hiking, ice fishing

COLUMBUS – Bitterly cold temperatures are again in the forecast for central Ohio, prompting the state to issue warnings about safe hiking and ice fishing.

Despite cold temperatures, Ohio Department of Natural Resources officials warn that no ice is safe and ice that is covered by snow should always be considered hazardous.

A family of seven, including five children, were rescued after some of them fell through the ice into the frigid waters of Mosquito Lake in northeast Ohio while ice fishing earlier this month.

Those planning on ice fishing should also prepare a “float plan” to let people know when they will be out on the ice, where they will be fishing, where they will park their vehicles and when they will return.

The department recommends contacting a local ice guide or bait shop to ask about ice conditions, fishing with a partner or in an area where other people are present.

Other safety tips include putting your cellphone in a plastic bag to protect it from getting wet, dressing for conditions, wearing an approved life vest, and avoiding areas with feeder streams, springs, bridge pilings, docks and dam structures since ice is usually very thin there.

Wind chills dipped below zero Friday morning in much of Ohio and forecasters say the frigid weather is expected to linger into next week, with even colder temperatures midweek.

Hikers should always let others know where they will be hiking and what time they will return. Check the forecast, and have a plan if severe weather strikes.

Dress warmly in layers, starting with insulating fabrics and adding a final layer of protective fabrics. Keep your head, neck and hands covered by wearing a hat, scarf and gloves. Sturdy waterproof boots and warm socks are recommended and hand warmers can help on longer hikes.
