Today’s storms could be severe

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Forecasters say there is a very good chance of severe weather in central Ohio Monday afternoon and evening.

The Storm Prediction Center says Central Ohio is at a slight risk for severe storms today.

The main threats will be damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain and the storms are most likely to move through the area in the late afternoon through this evening, ABC6/FOX28 meteorologist Dana Turtle said.

Turtle says more severe storms are possible into Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says there is a 70- percent chance of thunderstorms in Columbus Monday, the result of a cold front colliding with a mass of warm, moist air.

Severe weather spawned tornadoes in Iowa and authorities say a severe thunderstorm packing winds estimated at more than 80 mph caused significant damage to homes in Kentwood, Mich., just south of Grand Rapids, and injured several people.

National Weather Service meteorologist Evan Webb says it’s possible a tornado touched down briefly. There were reports of downed trees and power lines and a couple of buildings at least partially collapsed.
