Truck may leak chemicals into Licking Co. creek

NEWARK – Firefighters say they are concerned about chemicals leaking into a central Ohio creek after a tractor-trailer crashed through a bridge guardrail and into the waterway.

The Tuesday morning accident on Cherry Valley Road, near Reddington Road, left the truck driver, Miles Bauman, 52, hospitalized with a head injury.

Hazardous materials crews are monitoring the water quality in Raccoon Creek because of concerns about three possible chemicals — phosphoric acid, diesel fuel and sulfuric acid — leaking from the truck, Newark Fire Chief Patrick Connor said

Connor says there were some concerns about dead fish being found at the crash site. A barrier has been set up to contain the fuel.

He says people who live nearby do not draw water from the creek.

Cherry Valley Road was expected to remain closed between Reddington Road and State Route 16 for much of Wednesday morning.
