Unemployment inches downward

COLUMBUS – Ohio’s unemployment rate fell to 5.3 percent in September from 5.4 percent in August, according to data released by the state Friday morning.

Employers added 10,500 jobs over the month to 5.6 million in September 2017 while the number of unemployed workers fell by 6,000, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The number of unemployed Ohioans has increased by 21,000 since September 2016, when the unemployment rate was 5.0 percent.

Job gains in trade, transportation and utilities; educational and health services; and leisure and hospitality surpassed losses in financial activities, other services, information and professional and business services.

Manufacturing and construction both showed gains last month.

The U.S. unemployment rate for September was 4.2 percent, down from 4.4 percent in August, and down from 4.9 percent in September 2016.
