Unidentified man shot during fight

COLUMBUS – An unidentified man who died after being shot in the parking lot of an East Side apartment complex Friday night has become the city’s 72nd homicide victim of the year.

Officers called to the 3000 block of Cushing Drive on a report of a shooting at approximately 9:00 p.m. found the injured man lying on the ground, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, Sgt. J.R. Strayer of the Homicide Unit said.

Columbus fire personnel transported the man, whose name had not been confirmed, to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition. He died at 9:33 p.m., Strayer said.

Detectives say that the victim had driven to the area and met with several unknown individuals in the parking lot where he became involved in a fight when at least one of the suspects pulled a gun and fired at him, Strayer said.

The investigation continues.
