Unidentified woman one of 2 weekend homicide victims

COLUMBUS – Columbus police are investigating a pair of deaths reported Sunday, including a fatal shooting and the mysterious death of a woman whose name had not been released early Monday.

A caller to the police dispatch center at 5:36 p.m. reported that a woman who lived in an apartment in a building on Duncan Street, near Pearl Street on the North Side, was dead and officers and fire personnel who forced entry found the 60-year-old woman dead, Homicide Unit Sgt. Eric Pilya said.

Her name was not released and there was no information from police about the cause of death but they are treating it as the city’s 24th homicide of 2019, Pilya said.

UPDATE: This victim has been identified and a suspect arrested.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS.

About five hours later, a 29-year-old Northeast Side man was shot to death during a fight, the 25th homicide of the year, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Strayer.

UPDATE 3/28/19 8:25 a.m.: On March 28, detectives filed murder charges against Marton Hall, 24, for the shooting death of Tavon Peterson. Hall is in custody.

Officers summoned to a townhome on Balsam Lake Drive on a reported shooting at 10:26 p.m. found Tavon Peterson inside, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Strayer said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Strayer says witness accounts indicate that Peterson was fighting with another resident when at least one firearm was produced and several shots were fired.

Detectives are currently questioning witnesses as well as someone they would consider to be a person of interest.

The investigation continues.
