Victim run down, possibly shot, in West Side fight

COLUMBUS – Columbus homicide detectives say a man was killed when he was deliberately run down by a vehicle, and possibly shot, during a violent altercation on the Hilltop early Thursday.

Officers called to the area of 479 S. Warren at approximately 12:41 a.m. on a report of a person struck by a vehicle and also a shooting found Frederick Louis Massie, 48, in front of the address badly injured, Sgt. Jeff Strayer of the Homicide Unit said.

Massie was declared dead at 12:50 a.m. by Columbus fire personnel.

Strayer says investigators found that Massie and several others were fighting at the Food Mart Express market at the corner of S. Warren and Sullivant Avenues. The altercation continued further down S. Warren Avenue where the victim was again confronted by the same individuals and was apparently struck by a vehicle on purpose in the front yard of a home address, Strayer said.

The vehicle left the scene before police arrived and was later found abandoned, Strayer said.

According to Strayer, detectives are still investigating various witness accounts that Massie was also shot by the suspects.

This is the 97th homicide of the year in Columbus.
