Violent crime declines

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio and the rest of the nation continue to see the rates of violent crime decline.

According to the FBI’s 2013 report on Crime in the United States, the rate of murders, homicides, rapes, robberies and assaults fell 8.5 percent in Ohio from 2012, compared with a 5.1 percent drop in the nation as a whole.

“The report demonstrated that crime has been reduced in Ohio far more than other states including the five states within our region. This accomplishment is the result of the collective efforts of a lot of people. However, I want to specifically thank law enforcement officers from across Ohio serving on the frontlines in our efforts to reduce and prevent crime,” said John Born, director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

The bureau’s Uniform Crime Reporting program compiles data from 18,000 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Statistics for Columbus in 2013 were not available.

The 6.8 percent drop in the rate of robberies per 100,000 residents (3.9) was the largest decline, followed by assaults (6.0 percent) and murders (5 percent). Data for rapes were not available from 2012.
