Volatile pump price up 10%

COLUMBUS – Gas prices in Columbus increased by 20 cents compared with a week ago, an uptick in what has become a familiar up-and-down rhythm to prices at the pump.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Columbus in Monday’s survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and WEX Inc., was $2.23, a penny higher than the statewide and national averages. That’s up from $2.03 a gallon last Monday but only 2 cents higher than the price one month ago.

The auto club’s analysts say the fluctuating prices in the Great Lakes region can likely be attributed to the transport of supply to southeastern states affected by a pipeline outage.

Ohio’s 10-cent drop in its average p[ump price between Sept. 19 and 26 was the largest price dop in the nation.

The statewide average price across Ohio was $2.22, compared with $2.08 a week ago, and about four cents higher than the average of $2.18 reported at the same time last month.

The average price in Ohio on Monday was down 20 cents from the $2.42 reported a year ago.

The average price in the state matched the national average of $2.22, which was only about a penny higher than the national average reported a week ago.

The national average at this time last year was $2.29.
