Warnings about hoaxes may be hoaxes

NEWARK – Somewhere in this story is a commentary on misinformation during a crisis.

Newark police say there have been posts circulating on Facebook and other social media
platforms warning about people dressed as nurses and knocking on doors in the North end of Newark offering COVID-19 tests in an attempt to gain entry into homes, said Sgt. Clint Eskins, spokesman for the Newark Division of Police.

Eskins says the posts claim that the people ask to be let into the house and, once in the house they are rob the homeowners.

However, as of Wednesday, Eskins says Newark police has not responded to any calls of this nature in any part of the city and dispatchers say they have not received any calls for
people knocking on doors in reference to COVID-19.

He reminds everyone to be cautious of posts they read on social media and, if they do witness this type of activity, please call the police immediately.
