Water main break disrupts campus, hospital operations

COLUMBUS – Life was almost back to normal on the Ohio State campus early Tuesday morning after a water main break forced the cancellation of afternoon classes and disrupted operations at the OSU Wexner Medical Center on Monday.

Normal operations resumed at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday after water pressure began to return closer to normal, according to posts on the university’s website and Twitter feed.

Some non-emergency and elective surgeries and other procedures scheduled for Tuesday at the medical center were postponed, but patients were advised to report for scheduled appointment times.

Medical procedures and surgeries that were underway at the time of the water main break were completed.

Non-emergency procedures that had not begun were put on hold while crews worked to restore water service. Some outpatient appointments scheduled for Monday afternoon were postponed and will be rescheduled over the next several days, medical center officials said.

Crews continued to repair the water line break on John Herrick Drive on Tuesday and the roadway was closed between Olentangy River Road and Cannon Drive.

The City of Columbus issued a boil water advisory for the campus.

Students and staff were cautioned not to drink water or brush their teeth with water from the faucets or drinking fountains. until they are told it is safe to do so.

They were advised to drink bottled water and not to try to boil or treat water in dormitory rooms or elsewhere. Students in dorms were expected to receive updates through their university email and residence hall message boards.
