WBK: Mitchell fastest to 2,000 as Buckeyes roll

COLUMBUS (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell scored 23 points, becoming the fastest player in NCAA women’s basketball history to reach 2,000 points, and No. 12 Ohio State cruised to a 108-73 win over Southern on Wednesday night.

Mitchell, who has played in 78 games, reached the milestone with a pair of free throws with 3:54 to play. She tied for eighth fastest in reaching 1,000 points, getting there in 41 games.

Freshman Tori McCoy came off the bench, hit all 10 of her shots and scored a career-high 25 points for the Buckeyes (7-3). Shayla Cooper added 19 points and Sierra Calhoun had 13 with career highs of eight rebounds and three blocks. Mitchell, who was 9 of 10 from the line, also matched her career high of eight assists as Ohio State had a season-best 26 helpers on 36 made field goals.

The Buckeyes made 12 of 17 shots, including all three 3-pointers, to lead 33-13 after one quarter — for the most points they’ve scored in a quarter this season. They finished the game at a season-high 61 percent.
