West Side freeway facelift

COLUMBUS – A makeover for a major West Side freeway interchange moves into a new phase this week with the nighttime demolition of part of the I-70 bridge over I-270.

This is not the same bridge that caught fire this past July during a tractor-trailer accident, Ohio Department of Transportation spokeswoman Nancy Burton said.

I-270 north will close at I-70 at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday.
The following ramps will also be closed:
I-70 east to I-270 north
I-270 north to I-70 west
The detour for I-270 north thru traffic and ramp traffic is I-70 east to Wilson Road to I-70 west to I-270 north. All lanes and ramps will be open by 5:00 a.m. Thursday.

The southbound lanes I-270 will close at I-70 at 10:00 p.m. Thursday.
The detour is I-270 south to I-70 west to Hilliard-Rome Road to I-70 east to I-270 south. All lanes will be open by 5:00 a.m. Friday.

Westbound drivers on I-70 will still have two lanes of travel but will be shifted to allow the contractor to work on the bridge, Burton said. Eastbound traffic will not be impacted this year.

Work began on Sept. 28 on the project to add lanes in both directions on I-70, rehabilitate several bridges, resurface the roadway and construct noise walls between I-270 and Hilliard Rome Road. The $47 million project is set to be complete in 2017.
