White Castle backs search for Olympic “sliders”

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The new sponsor of USA Luge knows a thing or two about sliders.

White Castle announced a two-year partnership Tuesday with USA Luge. The agreement makes the hamburger chain an official partner and title sponsor of the organization’s offseason recruitment program — now dubbed the White Castle USA Luge Slider Search.

The program is aimed at raising awareness for the sport in the United States and attracting young athletes to the junior national development team.

The next recruitment tour begins May 13-14 in Columbus. Kids aged nine through 13 will have a chance to experience wheeled luge sleds, which travel at slower speeds, and be considered for the USA Luge Junior National Development team.

An Olympic sport since 1964, luge consists of athletes, known as “sliders,” sliding down a track of ice on sleds, feet first, at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. USA Luge sliders have won five Olympic medals.

White Castle was founded in 1921 and operates nearly 400 restaurants in 13 states.
