COLUMBUS – Occasional light snow was forecast to continue through Monday afternoon with new snowfall accumulations of less than an inch on top of several inches of snow that fell in central Ohio over the weekend.
The combination of the snow and below freezing temperatures will result in some icy conditions, according to WBNS 10-TV meteorologist Jeff Booth.
A storm system brought 1 to 3 inches of snow in a several hour period from late Saturday evening into Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
The snow transitioned to more of a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and eventually just to a cold rain by daybreak Sunday, with heavier snow falling near and north of I-70.
Snowfall amounts ranged from 2 inches in northwest Columbus to 5 inches in Grove City and Madison County and 6 inches northwest of Marysville.
Snow emergencies were declared in several central Ohio counties. Level 1 emergencies, denoting hazardous driving conditions, were in effect Monday morning in Delaware, Licking and Union counties.
The storm system had already blanketed parts of the Midwest. Chicago got almost 7 inches of snow by Sunday morning and, in Wisconsin, snow depths in some areas had reached more than 15 inches.
The storm was headed east by Monday. The National Weather Service said heavy snow is forecast to fall at a rate of 1 to 3 inches an hour Monday in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
