COLUMBUS, Ohio – A West Side woman who called to report that her boyfriend attacked her ended up facing assault charges after police sorted out exactly what happened.
Officers checking out a reported fight in the area of N. Wheatland Avenue and Violet Street on the Hilltop talked to Ila Garris, who said she had been beaten by her boyfriend, according to investigators with the Columbus Police Domestic Violence Unit.
Garris, 39, told the officers she has sprayed mace in Mark Waugh’s face during the fight and he ran away.
Police say Waugh, 40, took himself to Mt. Carmel West Hospital where it was found that he had been stabbed in the chest during the fight with Garris.
Waugh was listed in critical condition, a drain tube was placed in his chest and further surgery may be needed to repair the wound, police said.
After their investigation detectives arrested Garris on a charge of felonious assault.
