The first phase of the project, costing approximately $175 million, and incorporating almost 900 beds will open in late 2019 and replace the current downtown jail facility, which first opened in 1969, said Baldwin.

The new facility is designed to allow for the “direct-supervision” model of inmate supervision, and will incorporate more space for programing, mental health, and addiction treatment, Baldwin said.
