Would-be burglar is city’s latest homicide victim

COLUMBUS – A man who was injured while trying to rob a Merion Village home last month died almost three weeks later, police said.

Officers responding to a reported burglary in progress in the 400 block of Hinman Avenue at 10:01 p.m. found Darion Mullins, 55, lying in front of the home covered in blood, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Columbus police Homicide Unit said.

Mullins was taken to Medical Center in stable condition and died as a result of his injuries on Sept 7, Shimberg said. This was the 97th homicide in Columbus this year.

Investigators say Mullins was injured while commiting a burglary at the home where he was found. A 43-year-old man was apparently at the home when Mullins attempted to break in, Shimberg said.

The investigation was transferred to the Homicide Unit and is still ongoing, Shimberg said.

No charges had been filed by Friday.
