Would-be robber dies 9 days after shooting

COLUMBUS – A 24-year-old man who died Wednesday night from wounds he suffered more than a week earlier is the 96th homicide victim of 2016 in Columbus.

Samuel Dozier was allegedly shot by his intended victim during a holdup near E. 23rd and Hamilton avenues on Dec.5 and he died at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday at Grant Medical Center, homicide unit detectives said.

Officers responding to a reported shooting at 6:08 p.m. on Dec. 5 met with an unidentified 24-year-old man who said he had been the victim of a robbery attempt and defended himself with a firearm, striking Dozier, 24, several times, detectives said.

Police said Dozier’s victim is a valid concealed-weapon permit holder and cooperated during the investigation.

No charges had been filed.
