Wounded officer is veteran

COLUMBUS – Authorities say a Columbus police officer wounded when a man opened fire on a SWAT team trying to arrest him remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Officer Steven Smith, 54, is a 27-year veteran of the police force, spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.

Suspect Lincoln Rutledge has been released from the OSU Wexner Medical Center and faces a court hearing Tuesday, according to a report on WBNS 10-TV. He was ordered held without bond Tuesday morning on a charge of felonious assault.

Ohio State University says Rutledge resigned this month from an information technology job there. The university says Rutledge’s building access was revoked in March when he began to behave erratically.

Rutledge’s estranged wife told police he had mental-health issues.

Police have said Rutledge refused to surrender after Sunday’s shooting. They say several hours passed during which smoke and flames were seen in his apartment.

The 44-year-old man gave up after a loud bang was heard inside the apartment. Police say the noise was part of a strategy to end the standoff.
