You can set the pace on your street

COLUMBUS – City officials are giving you’re the chance to remind drivers to slow down in your neighborhood without running into the street to yell at them.

The city Wednesday unveiled the Columbus Pace Car Program, designed to reduce speeding and other violations on residential streets by reminding motorists that they are in a residential area where the speed limit is low.

Anyone interested in being part of the program can contact the city can email pacecar@columbus.gov, call 614-645-3111 or download forms from the city’s website which allows them to take a pledge to drive the speed limit and to obey all stop signs and red lights in their neighborhoods.

Those who turn in their pledge get a decal (above left) that can be placed on a car, identifying the driver as one who has pledged to become a Columbus “pace car,” according to a joint press release from the office of Mayor Andrew Ginther and the Department of Public Service.

If 60 percent of a neighborhood’s residents take the pledge, the residents can get a sign (right) to be displayed, signifying the neighborhood as a Pace Car Neighborhood.

Officials hope the decals and signs will help reduce speeding on residential streets through education and awareness.
