$1.6 million for cancer research in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State University researchers will investigate new breast cancer treatments with a major grant.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation has awarded the school more than $200,000 to investigate radiation treatment for breast cancer patients.

The $225,000 grant was awarded to Komen Scholar Dr. Julia White, M.D., at OSU to develop and test safer and more accurate radiation therapy approaches for early-stage breast cancer patients.

OSU joins institutions in Cleveland and Cincinnati in receiving more than $1.6 million in research funds from the Komen Foundation.

Kakajan Komurov, Ph.D, of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, is receiving a $450,000 to investigate how breast cancers develop resistance to the successful drug lapatinib.

Nearly $1,000,000 was granted to Joseph Baar, Ph.D., at Case Western Reserve, to develop improved treatments for metastatic breast cancer, including a cancer vaccine.

The Foundation on Thursday announced $4.5 million in research funding to “more fully understand the role that environmental issues play in breast cancer development.”
