2-year-old drowns in backyard pool

COLUMBUUS, Ohio – Franklin County sheriff’s deputies say a two-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool in Mifflin Township yesterday when his caregiver was distracted by another child.

Deputies and Mifflin Township police officers found the child unresponsive in a three-foot-deep poll on Ferris Avenue just after 12:30 p.m.., Sheriff Zach Scott said.

Detectives say the person watching the boy was distracted by another child when the boy apparently went out to the back deck of the home and fell into the pool, Scott said.

After a frantic search, the caregiver found the boy facedown in the water.

Scott says the boy, whose name was not released, was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
