6 dead, UA officer hurt, in NW Side crash

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio – Police say six members of the same family, including a toddler, were killed when their car collided with a police cruiser overnight

The dead included a man, his wife, and their four daughters, who were all riding in a Toyota without seat belts, when it collided with an Upper Arlington police cruiser, Perry Township Police Chief Robert Oppenheimer said.

The toddler was also not retrained in a safety seat, Oppenheimer said.

The officer was northbound on Riverside Drive, responding to the report of a robbery at a McDonald’s, 1905 W. Henderson Road, when it collided with with the car, which was westbound on Fishinger Road, Oppenheimer police said.

Lt. Steve Cesaro says the officer apparently had his cruiser’s lights and siren on at the time of the accident.

Oppenheimer says the officer was being treated at Riverside Methodist Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

No names had been released late this morning because relatives of the victims and the officer had not been notified.

The Perry Township Police Department and the Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit are still investigating the accident, Oppenheimer said.
