CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) – Cleveland’s police chief says 63 officers have been suspended for breaking rules during a deadly chase last November.
The suspensions announced Tuesday are the result of disciplinary hearings, Chief Michael McGrath said. The officers were involved in the 23-minute chase that wove through a neighborhood before ending when officers fired 137 shots, killing the fleeing driver and his passenger.
The longest suspension handed down was 10 days, McGrath said. One officer who broke rules during the chase was disciplined but not suspended.
The hearings did not include officers involved in the shooting. Those will come after prosecutors finish reviewing what happened.
Police have already announced punishments for 12 supervisors stemming from the chase. One sergeant was fired. A captain and lieutenant were demoted, and nine sergeants were suspended.
