Cordle’s “not guilty” a prelude to a “guilty” plea

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Attorneys for the Powell man who used YouTube to confess to causing a deadly crash say Matthew Cordle still plans to keep the promise he made in that video confessional.

“Matthew’s pleading guilty as soon as possible so that he can get his message out and express to the [Canzani] family how sorry he is for what happened,” attorney Martin Midian told reporters minutes after Cordle pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in connection with the death of Vincent Canzani, 61, in June.

The plea was a procedural step to have a judge appointed to hear his guilty plea next week.

Cordle will plead guilty Sept. 18 to a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide in the wrong-way crash that killed Canzani.

Cordle’s case made headlines after his video was posted online. It’s been viewed nearly 2 million times.

Cordle is facing up to eight years in prison for aggravated vehicular homicide and OVI for driving the wrong-way on I-71 in June and killing Canzani in a head-on wreck.
