Federal shutdown affects local officials

COLUMBUS – As the partial federal government shutdown enters its 25th day on Tuesday without an end in sight, local officials are trying to ease the impact on central Ohio residents.

Franklin County’s treasurer says affected federal employees in the Columbus area will get speeded up consideration for extensions to pay their property tax bills.

Treasurer Cheryl Brooks Sullivan says she hopes doing this will help with some of the stress facing federal workers.

The property in question must be owner-occupied and workers must speak to a treasurer’s office staff member and provide documentation of lost wages by Jan. 22, according to Brooks’ website.

In Toledo, the Lucas County treasurer announced last week that she’ll grant extensions for federal workers who won’t get paid during the shutdown. Treasurer Lindsay Webb says she made the move after hearing from government employees caught in the shutdown.

Meanwhile, Ohioans who receive food stamps are benefits early but are being warned that those benefits may have to last them longer.
