MARION, Ohio – A former Delaware County corrections officer has been convicted of raping a five-year-old girl while he was baby-sitting.
A Marion County jury found Randy Spencer, 28, guilty of four counts of rape, state Attorney General Mike DeWine announced Thursday. DeWine’s office says Spencer raped the girl between June 2012 and April. while he was babysitting the child in Marion County.
Defense attorney Rocky Ratliff says Spencer denies the charges, is disappointed with the jury’s decision and will appeal his conviction. He says prosecutors had no physical evidence against Spencer, whose girlfriend runs a baby-sitting business.
The Columbus Dispatch reports Spencer baby-sat the girl and other children when his girlfriend wasn’t available.
At the time of the incidents, Spencer was employed as a corrections officer in Delaware County and an auxiliary officer in Marion County, DeWine said. He had also previously worked as a Marion County sheriff’s deputy.
He faces a minimum sentence of 15-years-to-life in prison when he is sentenced in the Marion County Court of Common Pleas next Friday.
