Hot, hot, hot

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Central Ohio is expected to swelter again today under 90-degree temperatures and the number of heat-related illnesses is on the rise.

The National Weather Service has posted a Heat Advisory for much of the state (below) from noon until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, warning that  temperatures in the mid-90’s, combined with high humidity, could lead to heat indices up to 101 degrees.

Paramedics and hospitals say they’re responding to more emergencies related to the heat this week, and are reminding the public to take precautions.

Those tips include staying indoors with air conditioning, drinking plenty of water and checking on elderly relatives and neighbors.

Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic say your heart has to step it up when your body is trying to cool down to keep the blood flowing properly.  They say dehydration affects your heart and your blood pressure, too.

If you start to feel overheated or fatigued in the hot weather, get in the shade, drink water and work to get your core body temperature down.

The heat is also driving up attendance at Cincinnati’s city pools and MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland says heat-related illnesses have spiked this week

People in the northeastern part of the country will be cooking through at least two more days of heat in the 90s that will feel a lot hotter, forecasters say.

Humidity could make today’s mid-90s in Philadelphia feel like 110.  In Washington, DC the heat will jack up ozone levels to code orange, posing danger to children, the elderly, and people with heart and lung disease, who are all advised to stay indoors.

Forecasters say that’s when thunderstorms will break the heat wave on Saturday.
